- The purpose of this list was a reference sheet for myself. The premise
- was to get as much information as possible about each model that would fit
- on one line. Any additional information about a model appears in the footnotes.
- The list is not perfect and it has so much information that it can be confusing
- at times, but I think it provides the most information for reference in the
- least space. Please email me any corrections or additions to the list.
-
- NOTE: The class of 'R' is a Rumored future model. Those specs are VERY tenative!

- (%) For IIvi, IIvx, Performa 600: Mono sound output for any digitized
- sound (even if digitized in stereo. (Left channel is played)).
- However, CD audio can cross system board an play in stereo.
- Quadras have amplified stereo (i.e. sound passes through a 4 W amp)
-
- According to the DTS Q&A stack about the built in speaker:
- The only models that currently combine the two stereo channels
- into one for playback out of the internal speaker are the SE/30
- and the IIsi. All others use just the left channel. If you would like
- to check for the machine's ability to do mixing, you can use Gestalt.
- This is documented in Inside Macintosh Volume VI, page 22-70.
- No doubt new machines were released since this was written; I don't
- know what the situation is relative to the Quadras and Powerbooks.
-

- Ext Drive port are listed under features.
- V = Additional external video port
- Models built after 8/89 have FDHD's instead of 800K drives.
- A/UX: Models without FPUs cannot run A/UX.
-
- Footnotes:
- 1. All LC's: No automatic shutdown. Manual shutdown is necessary.
- 2. CPU Board upgrade for Color Classic II
- 3. LC520: 14" built in color monitor, CDROM, Dual Speakers (stereo)
- PPC upgradable, Power on from keyboard. Energy Saving Mode.
- Only sold to K-12 market.
- 4. IIvi: Not available in the US
- 5. IIvx: CPU runs at 32Mhz, rest of the system board runs at 16Mhz
- IIvx: Rumor: Use of MIDI has a hardware problem on the IIvx
- (Apple working on fix)
- 6. IIvi,P600,IIvx: Model comparison:
- IIvi : 16 MHz Processor, no cache, 16 MHz system bus speed, 32 bit bus
- P600 : 32 MHz Processor, no cache, 16 MHz system bus speed, 32 bit bus
- IIvx : 32 MHz Processor, 32K cache, 16 MHz system bus speed, 32 bit bus
- (This like a IIvi with built in accelerator and cache.)
- IIvx vs IIci: IIvx is slower except on video, since IIvx uses VRAM.
- 7. Centris 610: Also Centris 660AV???
- - No automatic shutdown. Manual shutdown is necessary from front switch.
- - Power off without shutdown could be bad for HD data integrity.
- - Front power switch may be mistaken for floppy eject switch by new user.
- - No full 68040 with FPU offered by apple. However, CPU is socketed and
- a full 68040 with FPU will run OK at 20 Mhz without heat sink.
- 8. Centris 650: Automatic shutdown available.
- Original low end model lacked FPU and Ethernet and had only 4 Mb soldered.
- 9. Tempest(Centris 660av), Cyclone(Centris 840av) Specifications: (Rumor!)
- Built-in digital video (in/out 16-bit color, NTSC, PAL, composite or
- S-video), 32-bit digital signal processors (AT&T 3210 DSP, for voice
- recognition/synthesis and 16-bit sound at up to 48kHz sampling).
- Faster DMA bus architecture and a high-speed serial port ("GeoPort", which
- can use the DSP to emulate a 14.4Kbps modem). They use 2Mb ROMs, which
- include Casper voice recognition. They will come with Ethernet
- and offer optional CD-ROM drives and 500Mb hard drives.
- Earlier reports:
- DSP does data compression. Mini Camera: 360x288x256 greylevel.
- 10. > Why is the Quadra 800 slightly faster than the Quadra 950 ?
- Three main reasons:
- 1) The Q800 has 120 ns ROMs while the Q950 has 150 ns ROMs
- 2) The Q800 uses 60 ns DRAM and has interleaved memory while the Q950 uses
- 80 ns DRAM and has non-interleaved memory
- 3) The Q800 has a newer, higher performance memory controller
- However, the Q950 has 24 bit graphics instead of the Q800's 16 bit.
- 11. Power PC's: Expect emulation to run at the speed of a 25 MHz 68040.
- 12. Duos: 4 lb. Dockable portables with no internal floppy.
- Built in: microphone, speaker
- Ports: serial RS-242, modem RJ-11, 152 pin 32 bit docking bus, power
- 13. Duo Dock and MiniDock:
- Ports: 1 ADB, 1 Video, 2 RS422 serial, modem RJ-11 pass thru, SCSI(HDI-30)
- Mike input, Sound output, Security connector.
- Minidock: You can use internal and external screen, Port for FD (HDI-20)
- Duo Dock: Internal screen is disabled when docked. V16C16 avail w/VRAM
- 14. PB 180C, active color duo: 640x480 pixels.
- 15. Rumored Duo Dock II: Ethernet, 32K CPU Cache, FPU standard, 1Mb VRAM,
- drives 8 bit color on 21" display

- | | Apple Macintosh Model Listing III Version 7/21/93
- | | Compiled by: | |
- | | Kevin D. Connery keradwc@rahul.net Email corrections.
- |___| Sterling Babcock jdsb@ee.duke.edu For model listing I. |___|
- (_____)-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-(_____)
-
- NOTE: This list is the same as Kevin's list. However, he orders the models
- based on date of release. I have reordered the lines in order of the
- other model list (generally in order of power within subgroups).
-
- Mac Speed Ratings, 03/01/93 Kevin D. Connery keradwc@rahul.net
-
- Once again, here's the listing of the various Macintosh models, and their
- Speedometer 3.11 speed ratings. The columns are straightforward: the Model
- name, the CPU speed (in MHz) and type (680-{00/20/30/40}, and the 5 speed
- ratings from Scott Berfield's Speedometer utility for 6.0 (mostly 6.0.7) and
- 7.0.1/7.1. Where more than one set of data was present, they were averaged
- in using straight arithmetic mean. The number in () at the end of each line
- indicates how many samples were used to generate the number listed.
-
- Data from this run was based on tests from Speedometer 3.10 and 3.11; tests
- which flagged as 'possibly incorrect' were not included. Also note that those
- systems using v7.1 will have somewhat different results (especially FP) than
- will those from v7.0.1, due to the SANE differences.
-
- As you can see, there are still a few holes in the table. If you have a Mac
- which fits one of those holes, I'd greatly appreciate it if you would run
- Speedometer and send the results, either the machine record or the text
- summary, to kevin@isi.com, for inclusion in the next version. Similarly, if
- you have a Mac which shows only 1 or two samples, additional data to increase
- confidence levels would also be appreciated.
-
- Upgraded machines' data is particularly desired. Radius Rockets, Daystar
- PowerCache, Fusion, Novy, etc., data would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Thanks to everyone who submitted data, and special thanks to Sterling
- Babcock (jdsb@ee.duke.edu) and David Ruby (daver@uiuc.edu) for their
- Macintosh Information lists [See those lists for more details about the
- various Mac Models], and, of course, Scott Berfield, for his Speedometer
- utility itself.
